Fuel The Jet takes off to give Tom Clover big-race glory at Newmarket

Fuel The Jet kicked in the turbo when coming from last to first to give trainer Tom Clover a notable victory in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket.

The Newbury novice winner disappointed when stepped up in class for the Acomb Stakes at York, but having regained the winning thread in a nursery at Doncaster a fortnight ago, he was given another shot at Group Three honours on the Rowley Mile.

Keen early on, Fuel The Jet (13-2) was dropped out at the rear of the field by Neil Callan before being produced with his challenge widest of all.

While one or two of his rivals met traffic problems after a slow gallop during the early stages, Fuel The Jet had clear daylight in front of him and picked up well inside the last of seven furlongs to prevail by three-quarters of a length from Notable Dream.

Clover, who was celebrating his 41st birthday, said: “We were checking the entries 15 minutes before closing and there were only four in it and he had just come out of Doncaster so well and we were so happy with him.

“We thought on ratings there was nothing to lose by giving him a go and it’s worked out which is nice.

“He’s always shaped up lovely at home and he’s a gorgeous horse well bought by Kerri Radcliffe and the owner has given me a free rein with him throughout. It didn’t work out when we ran him in the Acomb, but he’s coming right now.

“It just didn’t work out at York and we put a line through it and he’s bounced back nicely with some good wins.

“He’s probably better on goodish ground and whether we think about going abroad or just put him away and dream about next year, I’m not sure yet. He’s had five runs this year and I almost thought we were done already before this. We’ll see what happens, but it’s always nice to dream during the winter.”
